The deadline for many of the top 2026 arts scholarships has passed as of April 26, 2026. However, the “Golden Season” for the 2027/2028 school year has just begun. To get funding for artists in the fine arts, music, film, and design, they usually need a good portfolio and a “conditional admission” letter from a host school.
Here are the most prestigious and currently available scholarships for artists from other countries.
1. DAAD Study Scholarships for Artists in Germany
Deutschland has one of the most organised and generous scholarship programs for artists.
- The Award: For a Master’s degree or a “complementary” study at a state-recognised German art academy, it pays a monthly stipend (about €934 to €1,200), travel costs, and health insurance.
- The next application portal is expected to open in the summer of 2026, which is the 2027 cycle.
- Important Deadlines (Estimated for 2027):
- Fine Arts, Design, Visual Communication, and Film: November 2026.
- Music: From the end of September to the beginning of October 2026.
- Architecture: the end of September 2026.
- Selection: Based mostly on a professional portfolio (either digital or analogue, depending on the field) and a detailed study plan.
2. The Fulbright U.S. Student Programme for Arts Research and Study
The Fulbright Arts award is the best way for U.S. citizens to study art or do research on it abroad.
- Status Right Now: Applications Are Open.
- Due date: October 6, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.
- • The award covers all costs for one academic year of study or research in the host country.
- Applicants in the performing and creative arts must submit an additional portfolio through the Fulbright portal. This includes portfolios of pictures for artists and recordings for musicians and actors.
3. Stipendium Hungaricum for the Arts and Music in Hungary
The Liszt Academy of Music is one of the most famous schools in Hungary that offers scholarships.
- • The prize includes free tuition, a monthly stipend, help with housing costs, and health insurance.
- • The application system for the September 2027 intake will open in November 2026. This is the status of the 2027 cycle.
- Entrance Examinations: Many of Hungary’s top arts programs require a professional review of your portfolio, followed by a live entrance exam in Budapest in June or July.
- • Due date: Typically January 15 of the application year.
4. NL Scholarship (Netherlands)
This scholarship was once called the Holland Scholarship. It is for international students who want to study at Dutch art schools but are not from the European Economic Area (EEA).
- The Design Academy Eindhoven, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) are all taking part.
- The Award: A one-time payment of €5,000, €10,000, or €15,000 to help pay for the first year.
- Status for 2026/27: Many schools are now in the final review phase for applications.
- 2027 Cycle: Portals usually open on November 1, 2026, for the next year.
- Strategy: You need to apply to the Dutch art academy first. After you do that, you can usually find a separate link to the scholarship application.
5. GREAT Scholarships for the Arts and Justice (UK)
The British Council and the UK government are working together on a project that is aimed at students from certain countries, such as Mexico, China, India, and Turkey.
- The prize is at least £10,000 towards the cost of tuition for a one-year Master’s degree.
- Deadlines for 2026: Most universities have deadlines for the Fall 2026 intake between May and June 2026.
- Check the British Council website for universities that are currently giving out “Arts & Design”-specific GREAT grants.
6. Important 2026 Plan for Art Scholarships
If you want to secure an international arts grant, your portfolio must be more impressive than your GPA.
- Portfolio Freshness: Most 2027 committees prefer work created within the last two years. If you’re applying for a Master’s, don’t include your high school work.
- Artist Statement (The “Why”): In 2026, “Social Impact” and “Cultural Sustainability” are very imcrucialolarship committees. Tell us how your art deals with problems in today’s world or brings people from different cultures together.
- The Admission Letter: You can’t get the scholarship in Germany, Hungary, or the UK unless you are accepted to the school. Six months before the scholarship deadline, apply to college.
- Digital Formatting: Make sure your digital portfolio is hosted on a professional site, like Behance, Cargo, or your domain. Don’t send big PDF attachments unless someone asks for them.
7. Planning Timeline for the Future (2026–2027)
- May–July 2026: Finalise your portfolio and record high-quality auditions.
- The Fulbright portal will be open for applications for 2027–28 in August 2026.
- From September to November 2026, the DAAD and Chevening portals will be open for the 2027 cycle.
- The deadline for the Stipendium Hungaricum and NL Scholarships is January 2027.
