AI Specialists Scholarships

“AI for Science” and “Ethical Governance” have heavily shifted the scholarship market for AI specialists, as of April 27, 2026. While the deadline for many of the Master’s early 2026 intake has closed, the window for fully-funded PhD fellowships and specialised leadership grants for the late 2026 and 2027 intakes is open now.

Here are the top funding opportunities for AI researchers, engineers and ethicists.

1. The Google PhD Fellowship Programme for 2026

It is still the most important international award for graduate students working in the core and applied areas of Artificial Intelligence.

  • The Award Up to $85,000 per year (US/Canada) or significant annual bursaries in Europe and Africa for up to 2 years. Varies by region.
  • • Status Right Now: Applications Are Open.
  • • Deadline: 30 April 2026 (3 days left!)
  • • Fields of Interest : Machine Learning , Machine Perception , Natural Language Processing , Quantum Computing .
  • Candidates must be nominated by their graduate department at their university. Check your internal faculty portal now.

2. AIMS Google DeepMind Scholarship (AI for Science)

Especially for African students who want to focus on the intersection of AI and scientific discovery (e.g. climate modelling, drug discovery).

  • The Award: Full funding will be provided for tuition, accommodation, living expenses, medical insurance and a laptop.
  • • Current Status: The September 2026 cohort applications closed in March, but the 2027 cycle typically opens in late 2026.
  • Where: AIMS South Africa (Muizenberg, Cape Town).
  • • Requirement: African citizenship with a strong background in mathematics or physics.

3. Erasmus Mundus: EMJM in Imaging (Track on Visual AI)

A top European joint degree, where students rotate among top universities specialising in computer vision and visual AI.

  • The Award: Tuition fees waiver + monthly stipend of €1,400.
  • Current Status: 2nd Application Round OPEN
  • Deadline: April 29, 2026 (2 days left!)
  • Strategy: This round is only for self-funded or specific track applicants but this is the last window for the 2026 intake.
  • 2027 Planning: The primary scholarship portal for 2027 typically opens in November 2026.

4. NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Programme 2026/27

It is intended for PhD students who are conducting cutting-edge research in the areas of accelerated computing, robotics and autonomous vehicles.

  • • The Award: Up to $60,000 in funding, plus a required summer internship at a research office at NVIDIA.
  • • Current Status: Portals open in 2027 soon.
  • Important Deadlines: Historically, the application period has closed in mid-September for the following academic year.
  • Must have completed 1 year of PhD study and show high relevance to the technology stack of NVIDIA.

5. Chevening Scholarships (United Kingdom) 2027/28

The UK’s top “Future Leaders” award. This is what AI professionals pursue MAs in Artificial Intelligence, Ethics of AI, or Data Science for Government.

  • The prize includes full tuition, a monthly stipend, and travel.
  • 2027 Cycle Planning: Portals open Aug. 5, 2026
  • The deadline is October 2026.
  • Tip: Target your application to “Digital Sovereignty” or “AI Safety” – these are hot topics for the UK government.

6. Key Strategy 2026 for AI Specialists

In order to win a high-value AI grant this year, you need to take your application from “Model Building” to “Systemic Impact”:

  • The “AI for Good” Narrative: 2026 committees care less about LLM benchmarks and more about applied solutions. I’ve created a low-compute AI system that increases crop yield prediction in arid regions by 20%.
  • Compute & Research Proposals: For the Google and NVIDIA fellowships, your research proposal should include a clear resource plan. “Green AI” is a big evaluation metric this year. Please describe how your research makes efficient use of GPU/TPU resources.
  • GitHub & Open Source: A high Kaggle rank or a history of contributions to libraries like PyTorch or JAX is a huge merit multiplier for grants at Master’s level (e.g. Erasmus Mundus).
  • Standardised Testing: For top US and UK programmes, a near-perfect GRE Quantitative score (167+) is a must. Such scores are often used as a hard filter for merit scholarships in highly selective AI programmes.

7. Key deadlines at a glance (April/September 2026)

  • EMJM Visual AI (2nd round): 29 April 2026
  • • The Google PhD Fellowship ends on April 30, 2026.
  • • STEM Grant SBB Research Group May 31, 2026
  • • The Chevening 2027 Cycle starts on August 5, 2026.
  • NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship: Mid-September 2026
