As of April 25, 2026, leadership scholarships have switched to a “Network First” model. Donors are no longer only interested in students with high grades; they are also interested in people who can show how they have differentiated their community and are ready to join a global network of people who want to make a difference.
The following are the most prestigious scholarships for leadership that are currently open or will be open for the 2026–2027 cycle.
1. The Obama Foundation Leaders Programme
This initiative is a top programme for new leaders who are already making a difference in their areas. It focuses on building skills and leading with values.
- • Obama’s leadership in Africa from 2026 to 2027:
- June 2026 will determine the selection of candidates.
- • The programme runs from September 1, 2026, to May 1, 2027.
- • Format: mostly virtual weekly meetings, but there may be in-person global summits.
- Obama Foundation Scholars (Columbia and UChicago):
- Next Cycle: Applications for the 2027/2028 group should open in the autumn of 2026.
- Advantage: A fully funded residency or Master’s degree that focuses on social impact and leadership development.
2. Scholars from Schwarzman (China)
Made to get the next generation of world leaders ready to deal with the political situation in the 21st century.
- The prize is a fully funded one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
- • Deadlines for 2026:
- People from the U.S. and around the world can apply now until September 9, 2026.
- • The deadline for China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan is May 20, 2026.
- Main Point: A big part of the application is the “Leadership Essay”, in which you have to show that you can lead others and deal with difficult situations.
3. Scholarships from Chevening (UK)
The UK government’s main leadership program is for professionals who have worked for at least two years.
- Requirement for 2026: By July 9, 2026, applicants must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of their three chosen UK Master’s courses.
- The “Leadership” Pillar: Chevening is different from other grants in that it requires a 500-word essay about your “Leadership and Influence”. You need to provide specific examples of how you have started a project or led a team.
- The next cycle starts in August 2026, when applications for 2027/2028 usually open.
4. The Mandela Washington Fellowship (YALI)
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has a primary program for leaders between the ages of 25 and 35.
- The 2026 Reciprocal Exchange component (for alumni to work with U.S. professionals) had a deadline in late March, but the results will be announced in May 2026.
- Standard Fellowship: Applications for the main fellowship in 2027 (6 weeks of leadership training at a U.S. university) usually open in August or September of 2026.
- Tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management.
5. The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship (JJ/WBGSP)
This program is for mid-career professionals from developing countries who want to contribute to their own country’s growth.
- The deadline for Application Window #2 is May 29, 2026, at noon in Washington, D.C.
- • Benefit: full tuition, a monthly living allowance, and a round-trip plane ticket.
- Eligible Fields: Master’s programs in development-related fields (such as public policy, climate change, and global health) are taking place at universities around the world.
6. Plan for Success in Leadership Scholarships
If you want to win a leadership award in 2026, you need to change your application from “History” to “Impact”:
- Put a number on your impact: Instead of saying “I led a team,” say “I led a team of 15 to get a $20,000 grant that gave clean water to 300 homes.”
- The “Post-Award” Vision: After the programme, all of these donors want to know how you will use their network. Please specify the issue in your area that you want to fix in 2027 and beyond.
- Digital Presence: In 2026, a lot of hiring committees look at your LinkedIn or other professional social media. Make sure that your public profile matches the “Leader” story you are telling in your essays.
