Journalist Scholarships

As of April 27, 2026, the funding landscape is shifting into a high-stakes “Fellowship Season” for journalists. The mid-career fellowships at Harvard and Michigan have closed for 2026, but the 2027/28 planning window for world-class research and leadership programmes is opening. There are also several project-based grants and Master’s scholarships still available for the late 2026 intake.

Here are flagship opportunities for journalists, open now or gearing up for the next cycle.

1. Oxford Reuters Institute Journalist Fellowship

One of the world’s premier programmes for mid-career journalists to examine the future of the industry is at Oxford University.

  • The Award: The Award will cover all expenses, including a monthly stipend of £2,000, travel and visa expenses.
  • 2026/27 Intake: Applications for fellowships starting October 2026, January 2027 or April 2027 closed on 13 February 2026.
  • 2027/28 Planning Applications for the next complete academic year usually open in January 2027.
  • • A minimum of five years of experience in journalism. Freelancers are welcome.

2. Erasmus Mundus: Journalism, Media, and Globalisation

The leading Master’s programme in Europe for future international correspondents and media researchers.

  • The Award: Full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of €1,400 for up to 24 months.
  • Current Status: The result of the scholarship for the intake 2026-2028 has been published in March/April 2026.
  • 2027 Cycle Planning The application portal for the 2027–2029 intake usually opens on November 1, 2026.
  • Jan. 10, 2027 deadline.
  • Strategy: Use the next few months to get “clips” (published work) in international or English language outlets, as professional experience is a main selection criterion.

3. Nieman Fellowships (Harvard University) 2027/28

For those journalists who want a year of intensive study at Harvard.

  • The Award: Stipend of approx. $85,000 plus tuition, health insurance and child care support.
  • Where we are now: The 2026–27 application window is now closed.
  • Applications for the 2027/28 cycle will open in the first week of October 2026.
  • Due dates:
    • International Journalists. Dec. 1, 2026
    • U.S. Journalists: January 31, 2027.
  • Focus: Open to reporters, editors, photographers and filmmakers with at least five years’ experience.

4. Scholarships for Chevening in the UK for 2027/28

The UK’s top “Future Leaders” award. Many journalists do this by studying an MA in Investigative Journalism, Media Management or Digital Media.

  • The Prize: Tuition waiver, monthly stipend, and return flights.
  • 2027 Cycle Planning Portal opening expected August 5, 2026.
  • – Two (2) years of post-graduation work experience (2,800 hours).
  • Key Update: Chevening will focus more on applicants working on security, stability and inclusive governance for the 2027 cycle.

5. Bold.org Journalism Scholarships (US/Worldwide)

Targeted grants for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in journalism.

  • Teresa Politano Scholarship – $2,500 for emerging journalists. Deadline: May 28, 2026.
  • • Justin Burnell Memorial: $1,000 for LGBTQ+ writers and journalists Deadline: Ongoing 2026.
  • • Strategy: These are “one-click” applications but often require a specific essay or portfolio link.

6. Journalists’ Critical 2026 Strategy

To win a high-level fellowship or scholarship this year, your application should focus on the theme of “The Narrative of Impact”.

  • The Portfolio Pivot: Committees (Nieman, Reuters) are moving away from “daily news” clips in 2026 Prioritise samples that demonstrate in-depth investigation, data visualisation or cross-border collaboration.
